On Monday, September 14, our community celebrated the Feast of the Cross and the power of the cross of Christ, which overcomes all sin and suffering. As is tradition, parishes celebrate with Mass, followed by a bonfire and jumping over the fire, as a symbol of passing over the difficulties of life by the power of the cross.
The Feast of the Cross celebrates the finding of Jesus’ cross by Saint Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine. When the cross was found, fire signals were lit from Jerusalem to Constantinople, this is why we celebrate the feast day by jumping over fire. The feast is also a celebration of the power of the cross that overcomes sin and suffering.
Lord Jesus, grant us the grace to find strength in our crosses. Amen!
